Mission: Atlantic Trouble

Captains Log.

The Ermiana has been tasked with surveying a class seventeen Nebula in the Zeta Galen system. Although this Nebula has been charted by probes, Starfleet Command wants us to take a closer look. The Nebula doesn't pose a threat to the ship, so the survey should be pretty bog-standard.

Commander Sonak has assured me that the science department is more than equipped to handle this survey. This has given us the opportunity to enjoy what should be a quiet few days, at least for the rest of the ships departments.

I have recently stumbled across a holodeck program in our database. Crossing Earth's Atlantic Ocean on an ancient steamship. From my research this ship was one of the most luxurious and stylish of its time. I have therefore invited the senior staff to join me. I'm hoping this will allow us to not only learn a bit about Earth history, but establish stronger relationships between us....

The chilly Atlantic breeze felt refreshing as Misaka stood on the forward bridge of the ship. She looked out at the view ahead of the ship, the vast ocean beyond them. Nothing but water surrounded them. She couldn't help but smile as she repositioned her hat that was trimmed with gold thread.

She took in a deep breath of the air before turning and walking into the area known as the bridge. Unlike her Starship the bridge of this ship was split into two rooms. The 'Navigating Bridge' where one of the ships wheels sat between four telemotors. These telemotors were the ships 'comm system' of the day and used to relay orders to the ships engine room, aft docking bridge and wheelhouse. At the front the windows spanned the whole front of the room giving an impressive view forward.

Behind this long rectangular room stood the enclosed wheelhouse. Another ships wheel and set of telemotors was situated here. However this room was enclosed and equipped with shutters to ensure safe navigation at night. The back wall had new state of the art internal telephones installed to contact the crows nest on the forward mast as well as a new safety system, the watertight door system. The idea was still used today, in case of a hull breach they could seal sections of the lower decks off to prevent flooding.

This ship was the RMS Olympic, the first Olympic Class ocean liner, built by the English shipping company The White Star Line in 1911 and for many years crossed Earth's Atlantic Ocean between Portsmouth and New York.

Keeping in character, Misaka looked out of the forward bridge windows and placed her hands behind her back. "We've cleared the British Isles. Helm, take her to sea full ahead."

The Holodeck doors opened, immediately breaking the immersion, as Lurath stepped in. He was still wearing his Starfleet Uniform. A sight that would no doubt draw attention to the holograms in the program. As he proceeded forward, making his way to the forward deck, he was stepped by one of the holograms.

"Say, my friend, what sort of garment it that? I am afraid I have never seen any like that before." The man placed his hand on the Uniform, feeling the material with his fingers, before putting his hand on Lurath's Klingon Baldric which held the emblem of his Klingon House. "And what interesting jewelry. You must tell me where I must obtain such a curious outfit. I must have it."

Lurath took a hold of the programs hand and gripped it tightly, observing the pain and struggle in the holographic man's eyes brought a smile to his face, as he replied firmly. "The Uniform is Starfleet Issued. The jewelry is Klingon and is only bestowed to those of the House of Grogori. I am afraid, you will obtain neither, because you are long since dead. You just don't know it yet." He continued to walk, brushing passed the program with a bit of force, as he added. "Enjoy it while you can." He let out a growl. It wasn't intended, but for some reason, it came out as if reflex.

Musaka turned to Lurath. "Lighten up a little Lurath. This is all for a little fun and relaxation. Plus, look at this ship. It's fantastic! Just the sea, stars and good old fashioned compass to navigate by." She said. "Although, they didn't have Starfleet Uniforms back then..."

As Lurath approached, he stopped by the Captain and crossed his arms, looking up at the stars. "I am not in Uniform to disturb your fun and relaxation, Captain. I am here because I must decline your invitation. Something has come up." He held out the small PADD he had in his hand. "A Klingon shuttle has requested to rendezvous. A Klingon Dahar Master and his two students. It's not official. It's personal. He is a family friend who has come to see me for some reason. I have no idea why."

"I see," Misaka said as she took the PADD and glanced at its contents. "Well, we're not really doing anything that special around here. Put them up in guest quarters. They'll be your responsibility." she told him as she authorised the request and passed the PADD back.

Lurath took the PADD with almost a slight hint of hesitation. He paused in thought before clearing his throat. "Is there anyway I can pull you away from this... fun to greet the Dahar Master personally?" He said as if he was scared to bring it up. He looked at the Captain and continued. "The Dahar Master is a family friend and my former Mok'bara instructor. When I was a boy I had difficulty with balancing my anger and empathic abilities. He helped me find that balance." He looked away, as if ashamed of what he said, before clearing his throat again and locking eyes with the Captain. "Dahar Master Rorek deserves the honor of an official Starfleet Greeting." He spoke with a stern tone before looking away again. "Please... Captain."

"Let me know when he's aboard and I'll step out to welcome him aboard." Misaka replied simply.

Lurath seemed to smile, nodding his head a bit, as he said softly. "Thank you, Captain. I will." He turned to walk away, but stopped in his tracks. He turned around to face the Captain again. "I... apologize if I came off... demanding, Captain." He went to say something, stopped, then tried to again. "It's just... I've been away from home for a long time." Lurath stopped again. He was struggling with the words. He enjoyed being in Starfleet and on duty, but he still missed home and being around other Klingons. He wasn't sure how often that would happen on a ship like this. "I just want to make a good impression on my old master. You understand... don't you?"

Misaka smiled. "Of course I do. It happens for all of us too, including us Humans. Expecially when we run into old teachers." she explained to him. "I'd be nervous as hell if one of my old Academy professors came aboard this ship."

"Its not just that." Lurath replied as he took a step towards her. "These are still my people. How often are we going to encounter Klingons while performing Starfleet duties?"

"Out here, not often. We're not assigned by the Klingon Empire. But, if I know Klingons. They have a tendacy to pop up in places you least expect," she replied.

Lurath smiled slightly, feeling a bit more at ease. "I can assure you, Captain. The Dahar Master will give you no trouble while on board. He has a Jackal Mastiff named Kajunpak't, which means courage in Klingon, who may seem a bit off putting, but Kaj will not do anything unless the Dahar Master commands her to."

"I shall leave him in your capable hands. Make sure he follows the rules and we'll have no problems." Misaka told him. "And if you're sharing bloodwine, or any other sort of alcohol whilst on board. Remember to be responsible, this is still a Starfleet ship. You never know if you're going to be needed."

"Of course, Captain." Lurath replied firmly. "Only when off duty and never an excessive amount."

"Very well Commander. Now, if you'll excuse me. I have a slightly different ship to steer." She said thumbing to the Olympics' wheelhouse behind her.

Lurath nodded his head and looked around again. He gave the Captain a weak smile and proceeded to walked away, back towards the doors of the holodeck so he could leave this fantasy and return to his duties.

To be continued...
